Someone's done it for things are cheaper on the mountains. Someone's done it for they want to raise their children in a healthier environment and feed them with products from their own garden. Someone's done it for they have been working as workers in town for 40 years and now want to spend their retirement in a more humane and livable place. Someone's moved up their families and job up there, thanks to the Internet. Someone's left their jobs in the city and they now commute. Someone, born and bred in the valley, had moved to town to study, but then they decided to come back and run their family business.
They are the New Mountaineers, who are gradually coming to live on the mountains again, against the urbanization process big cities are undergoing and the people coming back to the country. This documentary feature offers multiple experiences along a path made of stories and images showing several aspects of a new kind of life, among personal achievements and everyday
troubles.
The aim of this documentary, part of a wider project including
an online magazine dealing with these same topics regarding mountain culture, is to highlight a quite unusual phenomenon considering where this trend is taking place: people, who have lived in town for all their lives or a long time, have now opted for coming back to live on the mountains. The reasons to leave the sense of social and economic wellbeing typical of a urban life, are many and most varied; this documentary aims at stressing the common features. Other values are being preferred instead of the consumerism and frenzy of the city and mild weather and fertile soil of the countryside, such as the uncontaminated mountain lands, a very harsh and even hostile environment.
