2000/2001

One of the first Italian FC is born

Fondazione Film Commission Torino Piemonte is established on 20 July 2000, with Regione Piemonte and the Città di Torino as its founding members. Marco Boglione is the President and Giorgio Fossati is the Director. In its first year of operation, FCTP supports the production of six films and five TV series. The following year, the number of supported feature films and series doubled and support was extended to short films, documentaries and animations. The Foundation also begins to attend the main international festivals and preview the main projects it supported, including Dario Argento's “Nonhosonno”.

2002/2005

Successful films and first TV series. The project of a “home” for cinema

Among the productions supported in 2002 were“Dopo mezzanotte” by Davide Ferrario, presented at Berlin International Film Festival two years later, “La meglio gioventù” by Marco Tullio Giordana, presented at Cannes Film Festival, and the first season of “Elisa di Rivombrosa”. The series, set in the historic residences of Piemonte, was one of the most successful Italian TV series of the 2000s, reaching a 41% audience share and attracting over 12 million viewers. It also led to an unexpected boom in visitors to the Castello Ducale of Agliè, the main filming location, making it one of the first Italian case studies of 'cinetourism'. From 2003 onwards, films directed by local authors such as Marco Ponti, Daniele Gaglianone and Davide Ferrario are in focus, as well as many TV series. Together with commercials, music videos and various 'specials' created for the Torino 2006 Winter Olympics, they contributed to a new image of Torino and Piemonte, as well as the growth of a local professional network. FCTP presented itself in Italy and abroad as a successful case study, launching the innovative project of its headquarters in via Cagliari. These were inaugurated in 2008 and are a new structure for Italy, designed to welcome productions and offering offices, equipment, warehouses, parking, a casting room, a cinema and service areas for crews.

2006/2007

Visibility and support for productions grow

Steve Della Casa is appointed President of Film Commission Torino Piemonte. His mandate is to increase the capacity to attract major productions and to provide greater support for local independent productions, particularly documentaries. Notable feature films from 2007 include “Il divo” by Paolo Sorrentino, “I demoni di San Pietroburgo” by Giuliano Montaldo, “Il resto della notte” by Francesco Munzi, “Il sangue dei vinti” by Michele Soavi, “Sanguepazzo” by Marco Tullio Giordana and “Signorina Effe” by Wilma Labate. Notable TV series include the third part of the “Elisa di Rivombrosa” cycle, “Einstein” by Liliana Cavani and “Zodiaco” by Eros Puglielli. FCTP is presenting itself to the world of advertising at the Triennale di Milano and is increasing its support for commercials, video installations, short films and music videos. The Piemonte Doc Film Fund, the first Italian fund to support the development and production of documentaries, is launched at the beginning of the year. It supports projects created in Piemonte or other regions or nations, and will support 57 projects of international relevance in its first year.

2008

Bellocchio, Sorrentino: the great Italian cinema at work in Piemonte

Among the supported projects, “Vincere” by Marco Bellocchio stands out. Filmed in Torino and Carignano, it won more awards than any other film at the 2010 David di Donatello Awards. Meanwhile, FCTP has also started supporting TV shows, formats and photo shoots. In 2008, there was an important mission in Cannes to accompany “Il divo”, “Il resto della notte” and “Sanguepazzo”, as well as the presentation of the newly established TorinoFilmLab, of which FCTP is a partner. There was also a project for the new headquarters in via Cagliari, which will be inaugurated in December. Throughout the year, FCTP organises previews, special awards, events and conferences. At the end of the year, with the advice and funding of the Regione Piemonte, FCTP established FIP Srl, a company that contributes financially to the creation of film productions in Piemonte.

2009/2012

Industry Days and FIP Innovation

Davide Bracco is the new Director. Feature films these years include  “Noi credevamo” by Mario Martone, filmed in Torino, Saluzzo and Savigliano and winner of seven David di Donatello Awards, including Best Film and Best Screenplay. Futhermore, “La solitudine dei numeri primi” (The Solitude of Prime Numbers) by Saverio Costanzo, filmed in Torino and Sestriere. In 2008, periodic events are organised for local independent producers with representatives from major TV channels, distributors and co-producers in attendance. The following year, the number of events organised directly or in collaboration with other organisations and associations increases further. The headquarters in via Cagliari establish themselves as a hub for the sector, and the tenth anniversary of the Foundation is celebrated there with an open day. There are continued productions, initiatives abroad, previews, collaborations with local organisations, and a series of reviews and conferences. In 2010, FIP Srl changes its structure, with Paolo Tenna serving as CEO from 2010 to 2013. During this period, the company invests in 15 works as a revolving fund, including “Quando la notte” by Cristina Comencini, “Tutta colpa della musica” by Ricky Tognazzi, “Il giorno in più” by Massimo Venier, “Sette opere di misericordia” by Gianluca and Massimiliano De Serio, “I primi della lista” by Roan Johnson, “Venuto al mondo” by Sergio Castellitto, “La Luna su Torino” by Davide Ferrario and “Pulce non c’è” by Giuseppe Bonito.

2013/2015

New initiatives and financing

Paolo Damilano is the new President of Film Commission Torino Piemonte since 2013. At the Rome International Film Festival, both “Tir” by Alberto Fasulo and “Dal profondo” by Valentina Pedicini win awards, both productions supported by the Piemonte Doc Film Fund. The following year, the TV series “Non uccidere” begins, involving Lumiq Studios in Corso Lombardia and giving rise to a series of projects involving the Rai Centre in Torino and a large number of professionals, actors, service providers, and locations throughout the territory in subsequent years. The Short Film Fund is established with the aim of internationalising and professionalising the short film sector in Piemonte, as well as stimulating the development of new talent. FCTP hosts the assembly of Italian Film Commissions and the 137^(th) session of Eurimages at its headquarters. FIP Srl shifts its focus from direct financing to consultancy on tax credits for companies interested in film investment, an activity it carries out until 2017. In 2015, feature films include “Fai bei sogni” by Marco Bellocchio, presented at Cannes in 2016; “La corrispondenza” by Giuseppe Tornatore, with filming in Stresa and Orta San Giulio; “Un posto sicuro” by Francesco Ghiaccio, filmed in Casale Monferrato; “Le ultime cose” by Irene Dionisio, from Torino, selected the following year at Venice; and “I tempi felici verranno presto” by Alessandro Comodin, shown at Cannes in 2016. The FCTP headquarters host a wide range of events, including workshops on new digital formats. It is also one of the four Italian stops of “Rai – Opportunity Tour”, hosting meetings between Rai representatives and producers from Piemonte, Liguria, Val d’Aosta and Lombardia. Paolo Manera is the new Director in September 2015.

2016/2017

Productions, events and initiatives grow

For the first time, in 2016 more than 100 productions get Film Commission torino Piemonte's support, including “Una questione privata” by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, based on the novel by Beppe Fenoglio, as well as a doubled number of commercials, reports, video clips and TV formats, including European and Asian productions. FCTP increases the number of previews and initiatives in the area, including the Langhe Roero and Monferrato Award (where Paolo Sorrentino, Matteo Garrone and Roberto Benigni are guests in three editions between 2016 and 2019). Workshops and collaborations with other festivals and institutions are established, including the Centro del Cortometraggio and the newly born Torino Short Film Market. With the support of Compagnia di San Paolo, further industry days were added for the benefit of local producers, involving TV channels, platforms and distributors. In 2017, the development of a fund for large productions with aid measures through European funds began, alongside the Regional network aiming to unite the main municipalities of Regione Piemonte and involve the territory in the creation of audiovisual works. Various actions were also taken to support the animation sector, including the Cartoons on the Bay festival organised by Rai Com in Torino for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 editions. A new plan was also introduced to manage and make full use of the spaces in Via Cagliari, improving their energy efficiency. FIP transitions from co-financing to collaborating with FCTP on events and special projects until 2019, when the organisation begins its liquidation. Events abroad and in the region, as well as collaborations, will continue, including those with Biennale Democrazia, Polo del ‘900 and Piemonte Movie for the circulation of works in regional cinemas.

2018

A further push: Piemonte Film TV Fund, international productions and TFI Torino Film Industry

With the support of Film Commission Torino Piemonte, Regione Piemonte launches the first call for the Piemonte Film TV Fund to support the production of feature films and TV series. This reinvigorates the local film industry and provide opportunities for professionals and talents based in the area. Meanwhile, the first major international productions are arriving from the USA, Canada and the UK. Alongside the funds for short films and documentaries, a tender opens for digital media and VR projects. Titles supported by FCTP are becoming increasingly present at festivals such as CannesLocarnoVeneziaRoma and Torino. FCTP achieves full legislative recognition in both the new cinema law n. 220 and the implementing decree, as well as through its presence at the Coordination Table of Regions and Film Commissions and the General Directorate of Cinema and Audiovisual. It is also recognised in the new consolidated text for culture, approved by the Consiglio Regionale del Piemonte and whihc comes into force on 1 January 2019. Partnerships in the region and distribution projects increase. TFI Torino Film Industry is born, a market coordinated by FCTP in which Production Days for local independent producers are integrated with the Torino Short Film Market and the activities of the TorinoFilmLab to create a meeting space and market alongside the Torino Film Festiva.

2019

Over 200 productions and a large international production

For the first time, over two hundred productions are supported and monitored throughout the year, including 14 feature films, 6 TV series, 27 short films, 45 documentaries, 116 commercials, reports, TV formats and music videos. The Piemonte Film TV Fund's continued support leads to the creation of new projects and service companies, as well as a more precise verification of the economic impact on local professionals, suppliers and accommodation facilities (equivalent to five times the tender amount). FCTP opens the Piemonte Film Tv Development Film Fund to support writing and development of feature films and fictional series and to provide further encouragement to independent authors and producers in the area. The Animation School of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia moves to FCTP headquarters. After a lengthy preparatory period that began a year earlier, filming took place in Torino, Venaria and Racconigi, both on location and in the Royal Residences, for “The King’s Man” by Matthew Vaughn. This is the most impressive production to be made in Piemonte to date: one hundred local professionals worked alongside 300 international technicians, 1,400 extras, and stars such as Ralph Fiennes. Production goes on for “Miss Marx” by Susanna Nicchiarelli as well, a co-production that goes on to be recognised at the Venice Film Festival, other international festivals, and the David di Donatello Awards. The TFI Torino Film Industry and Production Days also hosted the Italian Screenings Academy, organised by Doc/it, and grew in programme size and number of accredited participants, establishing themselves as an original and internationally important co-production meeting. The Foundation loses Paolo Tenna, Board Member and CEO of FIP; he will be honoured through various initiatives in coming years, and the cinema room at the headquarters is named after him in 2021.

2020/2021

The pandemic crisis: a necessary consolidation for a fresh start

In its twentieth anniversary year and during the ongoing emergency caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, FCTP works to consolidate and further affirm Piemonte's unique characteristics. This involves immediately coordinating safety procedures with public bodies and institutions, increasing funding for productions, and facilitating connections between filmmakers, live entertainment, streaming and in-person events. The Regional network is also expanding and is committed to supporting exhibitions and meetings. Furthermore, there is an extraordinary commitment to supporting cinemas, with four highly attractive summer arenas planned for summer 2020. Meanwhile, international productions are increasing, with films and TV series from the UK, Switzerland, Germany and India. In 2021, record results are achieved, surpassing those of 2019: there is an increase in internationality and quality of proposals, site inspections, activities at the headquarters (where, in collaboration with the Museo Nazionale del Cinema, the offices of the Torino Film Festival, CinemAmbiente, Lovers, TorinoFilmLab and the Associazione Museo Nazionale del Cinema establish themselves), the number of partnerships and cities and municipalities participating in the Regional network, and the special projects (including “Ciak! Piemonte che spettacolo” with the CRT Foundation and Piemonte dal Vivo, and Guarda che storia! Racconti per lo schermo with the Salone Internazionale del Libro. A protocol was also launched with the  Università degli Studi di Torino, Politecnico di Torino and Museo Nazionale del Cinema for research and project development activities.

2022

A new phase in the name of internationality, quality, responsibility

The new Board of Directors, established at the end of 2021 with Beatrice Borgia as President, is beginning a new phase with the aim of maintaining continuity through consolidation and strengthening in three areas: internationality, in terms of attracting major international productions and supporting the growth of the local production chain; quality, as an element running through all genres and initiatives; and responsibility, not only in terms of environmental sustainability, but also in terms of social, cultural and economic impacts, as well as the ability to promote Torino and Piemonte in the tourism sector. This year sees a series of titles that clearly visualise this approach, from the filming of “Fast X”, the latest instalment in the global blockbuster franchise Fast & Furious, to the filming of the third and fourth seasons of the internationally acclaimed series “My Brilliant Friend” in Torino, and the filming of “The law according to Lidia Poët”. There also are Italian productions of significant production and thematic importance, such as “Non morirò di fame” by Umberto Spinazzola, “The Beautiful Summer” by Laura Luchetti, the second season of “Cuori” by Riccardo Donna, “Il nostro Generale” by Lucio Pellegrini. Noteworthy is also the qualified presence at prestigious events such as Cannes and Venezia with films such as  “The Eight Mountains” by Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch, and “Amanda” by Carolina Cavalli. The numbers and the presence of qualified professionals at industry events continue to grow; however, 2022 is also a year of planning and more careful communication and promotion of what has been and is being achieved, as well as strengthening relationships with institutions, banking foundations, other territorial bodies in Piemonte, and city universities. It is also a year of preparing new incentives to attract productions and support and grow the local supply chain.

2023

The record-breaking year

2023 is a turning point for innovation, with new, broader and more structured funds being activated, particularly for feature films and TV series (with animated films also being included for the first time). Regione Piemonte triples its support for the Piemonte Film TV Fund for the period 2023–2025, and Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo intervenes for the first time to support a film fund, backing the innovative Piemonte Film Tv Development Film Fund and its international promotion. 2023 is a record-breaking year, for the number of productions supported with funds, those receiving logistical and institutional support, and the number of filming days in the area (1,300, with an average of four sets in operation each day). It also sets a record for its economic and social impact on the area in every aspect, with an increasingly qualified local supply chain of professionals and companies operating at an international level throughout the production process, including post-production, special effects, and virtual sets. The project's involvement extends from Torino and its surroundings throughout the regional territory. There was also a record number of projects presented at international events, thanks to high-profile titles including international blockbusters, debut films, short films, documentaries and animations. There were also record numbers of previews and initiatives in the area, participants in industry activities and a wide network of initiatives developed with an ever-increasing number of partners, with a presence on all communication channels. 2023 is also the year in which collaboration with the Università degli Studi di Torino and the Politecnico di Torino is strengthened through internships, doctoral programmes and research projects connecting training courses with the local artistic and professional ecosystem.
