A journey inside mental hospitals.
A thought on the mental illness before and after Law No. 180, which definitively closed those mental hospitals.
The tragedy experienced by these forgotten institutions will be primarily told by those who were unaware victims of the institution itself: the mentally ill persons. The used-to-be reality of psychiatry in Italy will be focused through their looks, words, lucid memory. A dreadful portray of forgotten lives, sufferings and loneliness, too often neglected.
The ancient mental hospitals will serve as ideal sets where to project library pictures. The memory of the past will turn into life in the framework of these places, which will provide the imaged-based story with the phisicy of that tragedy, often fading away in our memory.
Interviews with psychiatrists, nurses, relatives, mentally ill persons which were actors in those years will also lead our retrospecitve story.
The documentary will deal with the process of de-institutionalization of the mental hospital, and the different solutions it brought about in the nearby. It will discover what housing in a community or in a hosting location, working in a protected cooperative, living in the social world mean.
Chronicles, interviews, insights will tell more than thirty years of our history, the history of all of us.
